The Bitcoin Core development team has released Bitcoin Core 31.1, the first maintenance release following the major 31.0 update. While this isn’t a headline-grabbing release with new consensus features, it delivers a number of important improvements that enhance privacy, stability, performance, wallet functionality and the developer experience.

Privacy Improvements

One of the most important fixes in Bitcoin Core 31.1 addresses the recently discovered privacy issue in the new -privatebroadcast feature that was introduced in version 31.0.

Under certain network conditions, a user’s IP address could unintentionally be exposed while broadcasting transactions. Version 31.1 fixes this issue, making Private Broadcast behave as intended and improving privacy for users who rely on it.

Better Node Performance

Bitcoin Core 31.1 includes several optimizations that improve node performance and reliability.

Developers have refined blockchain validation, networking behaviour and internal memory management. While most users won’t notice dramatic changes immediately, these improvements help nodes synchronize more efficiently and make the software more robust over long periods of operation.

Wallet Improvements

Wallet functionality also received attention in this release.

Bitcoin Core 31.1 contains numerous bug fixes and accuracy improvements, resulting in a smoother experience for users managing on-chain funds with the built-in wallet. Several edge cases were resolved and wallet reliability has been improved throughout the codebase.

Better Support for Developers

As with nearly every Bitcoin Core release, a significant portion of the work focuses on developers.

Version 31.1 includes improvements to the RPC interface, testing framework, build system, documentation and internal code quality. These changes make it easier for contributors to build, test and maintain Bitcoin Core while reducing the likelihood of future bugs.

Bug Fixes Across the Board

In addition to the larger changes, Bitcoin Core 31.1 contains dozens of smaller fixes affecting:

  • Networking
  • Validation
  • Wallets
  • Build system
  • Testing framework
  • Documentation
  • Translations

Although many of these changes are relatively small individually, together they improve the stability and reliability of the software.

Should You Upgrade?

If you’re already running Bitcoin Core 31.0, upgrading to 31.1 is recommended. The release fixes a known privacy issue and includes numerous bug fixes and performance improvements without introducing consensus changes.

As always, make sure to verify downloaded binaries and back up your wallet before performing any software upgrade.

Node software

While Bitcoin Core is seen as the baseline client, there are many more clients available. For an overview check out our article Which Bitcoin Client Should You Download.
A very populair alternative currently is Bitcoin Knots for it’s anti spam features (BIP-110).

Final Thoughts

Bitcoin Core 31.1 may not introduce flashy new features, but it demonstrates how Bitcoin development continues to focus on reliability, privacy and incremental improvements.

This is typical of Bitcoin Core development. Rather than making sweeping protocol changes, developers continue refining the software that secures the world’s largest decentralized monetary network.

For anyone running a full node, 31.1 is a worthwhile upgrade that strengthens both privacy and overall stability.
